(MENAFN) US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has landed in Kolkata, a city in eastern India, marking the beginning of a four-day official visit to the South Asian country.

Ahead of his departure, the senior US diplomat described the trip as “important.” He emphasized the value of the engagement, stating, “There's a lot to work on with India, they're a great ally and partner. We do a lot of good work with them so this is an important trip,” said Rubio.

US Ambassador to New Delhi Sergio Gor posted on the US social media platform X that Rubio arrived early on Saturday. “This is his first trip to India,” he said. He also noted that "trade, technology, defense, QUAD, and many other items to discuss and advance over the next few days.”

Following his stop in Kolkata, Rubio is expected to travel to New Delhi, where he will meet Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, according to an Indian official.

He is also set to hold discussions with India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Sunday. In addition, Rubio will take part in the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue, widely known as the Quad, during a foreign ministers’ meeting hosted by India on Tuesday. His schedule further includes planned visits to the historic cities of Agra and Jaipur.
