South Korea’s President Names Special Counsels for Yoon Probe

(MENAFN) South Korean President Lee Jae-myung has named six assistant special counsels to back a fresh investigation into former President Yoon Suk Yeol, focusing on insurrection charges tied to Yoon’s unsuccessful martial law attempt last year, local outlets reported Friday.

This decision follows a recommendation from independent counsel Cho Eun-suk, who proposed eight candidates for the assistant counsel roles, according to a local news agency.

Just last week, President Lee appointed three independent counsels to look into several serious allegations against Yoon, including the aborted martial law effort, accusations of corruption involving Yoon’s wife, and his purported interference in the probe of South Korean Marine Corporal Chae Su-geun’s 2023 death.

Additionally, Lee is anticipated to select four more assistant special counsels by Saturday to aid a separate inquiry into claims of influence peddling linked to the investigation of Chae’s drowning. Chae died during a search and rescue mission amid severe rain and flooding, the news agency noted.

Yoon, who was ousted in April after the Constitutional Court upheld his impeachment, has consistently denied all accusations.
