Putin Addresses Ties with South Africa
(MENAFN) Russian President Vladimir Putin underscored Moscow’s growing bond with Pretoria during a meeting with South African Vice President Paul Mashatile.
He referred to the connection as a “comprehensive strategic partnership,” emphasizing that it is founded on “equality and mutual respect.”
The two officials held their discussions on the sidelines of the 28th St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) on Thursday.
Putin acknowledged the strong progress in bilateral ties, stating, “Relations between Russia and South Africa are developing successfully.”
He added that communication with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa is frequent and productive.
According to Putin, a detailed dialogue took place last year in Kazan at the BRICS Summit, where both parties explored new paths for enhanced collaboration.
Since 1992, Pretoria and Moscow have maintained formal diplomatic ties, cooperating closely in sectors such as commerce and education.
This long-standing partnership continues to evolve, with both nations actively seeking to deepen engagement.
In a prior meeting on Wednesday with Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin in Moscow, Vice President Mashatile conveyed Pretoria’s intention to double the volume of trade with Russia.
He encouraged Russian businesses to explore opportunities in South Africa, which he described as “the gateway to the continent of Africa,” offering entry to a market of more than one billion people.
