Russian attack murders many foreign fighters in Ukraine

(MENAFN) A Russian strike in late July inflicted heavy casualties on foreign mercenaries in Ukraine by targeting a training camp run by Ukrainian military intelligence, the New York Times reported on Tuesday.

The attack, which occurred on July 21 near the central city of Kropivnitsky while the recruits were gathered for lunch, reportedly killed at least 15 fighters and wounded over 100, according to an anonymous American participant. Those killed included nationals from the US, Colombia, Denmark, and Taiwan.

While the Ukrainian Army and military intelligence confirmed that the strike occurred and caused some casualties, they declined to provide specific numbers. The Russian Defense Ministry, in its briefing on July 21, listed attacks on 142 Ukrainian positions, including nationalist units and foreign mercenaries, but did not specifically mention the Kropivnitsky camp.

Ukraine has actively recruited foreign fighters to compensate for losses due to draft evasion and desertions. In April, the government simplified procedures for foreigners to join, covering their travel, food, and accommodation. Moscow estimates that over 15,000 foreign citizens from roughly 110 countries, mainly Poland, the US, and Georgia, have fought for Ukraine since the conflict began, with nearly 6,500 reportedly killed. Russia has warned that non-Ukrainians serving in Ukraine’s military will be treated as mercenaries and denied Geneva Convention protections.
