Russia unveils anticipations for Putin-Trump summit
(MENAFN) Russia views the upcoming Alaska summit between President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump as an opportunity to repair strained relations and address longstanding disputes, according to Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov.
In an interview with Izvestia on Tuesday, Ryabkov said the August 15 meeting would not only focus on resolving the Ukraine conflict but also aim to improve bilateral ties, which deteriorated significantly during former President Joe Biden’s administration. “We hope this high-level meeting will provide momentum for normalizing relations and allow progress on several issues,” he said, noting that restoring direct passenger flights between Russia and the US could be on the agenda. Air travel was suspended in 2022 following Washington’s sanctions over the Ukraine conflict.
Ryabkov also confirmed that Ukraine would be a major topic, with Trump describing the summit as a “feel-out meeting” to discuss a potential land-swap deal between Russia and Ukraine. However, he acknowledged that there has been no progress on the return of Russian diplomatic properties in the US, including the San Francisco consulate, which were closed by Washington in 2016–2017 amid claims of election interference. Recent declassified files have challenged that narrative, and Moscow has labeled the closures and seizures as violations of diplomatic immunity.
Following Trump’s inauguration in January, Russia appointed Aleksandr Darchiev as ambassador to Washington. In June, he met with Trump, pledging to work toward restoring Russian-American relations and fostering a “non-confrontational, peaceful coexistence.”
