Russia Prioritizes National Interests Ahead of Summit

(MENAFN) Russia intends to prioritize its national interests during the upcoming summit between President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump, scheduled to take place in Alaska on Friday.

This was stated by Alexey Fadeyev, a deputy spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, during a press conference held in Moscow.

Speaking to a news agency, he emphasized, "Regarding the objectives of the Russian delegation in negotiations in Alaska, they are dictated exclusively by national interests."

Addressing speculation about a possible territorial exchange between Russia and Ukraine, Fadeyev reaffirmed Russia’s stance on the matter.

He asserted that "the territorial structure of the Russian Federation is enshrined in the Constitution of our country, and that's final."

In 2022, Russia "incorporated" four Ukrainian territories, which Western nations refer to as an "annexation."

Although Moscow lacks full control over these areas, it also maintains a presence in other Ukrainian regions such as Sumy, Kharkiv, and Dniepr.

Reports in the media have hinted at a potential swap of these areas for complete sovereignty over the four contested regions.

Fadeyev also announced that Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will be part of the upcoming dialogue.

"Yes, I can confirm Lavrov's participation in this event planned for next Friday in Alaska," he stated, while noting that the Kremlin would handle any further inquiries regarding the agenda.

According to the deputy spokesman, the summit is expected to tackle a range of pressing matters.

These include "all accumulated issues, starting from the Ukrainian crisis and ending with obstacles to establishing normal functional bilateral dialogue."

The Alaska summit was initially made public by Donald Trump last week and was later validated by Russian presidential aide Yury Ushakov.

Both officials indicated that the primary goal of the meeting is to work toward a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Ukraine, with additional discussions anticipated to take place within Russia in the future.
