South Africa Blasts U.S. 2024 Human Rights Report as “Deeply Flawed”
“The report's reliance on contextual information and discredited accounts is highly concerning. It cites an incident involving the deaths of farm workers and, despite the matter being actively adjudicated by our independent judiciary, misleadingly presents it as an extrajudicial killing,” DIRCO stated.
The 21-page report, published by the U.S. government on Wednesday, asserts that "the human rights situation in South Africa deteriorated significantly over the past year," citing the expropriation of land from Afrikaners and "abuses targeting racial minorities" as key factors.
The report also highlighted “extrajudicial killings,” referring to media reports of criminal suspects being killed during shootouts with police, particularly in KwaZulu-Natal Province.
DIRCO countered these allegations, insisting that the claims are both premature and an outright misrepresentation of the facts, as the individuals involved are currently undergoing legal proceedings in a court of law.
“Similarly, incidents of police using force are mentioned without acknowledging the robust processes in place, where institutions designed to protect our democracy are actively investigating whether due process was followed and if such force was warranted,” the department added.
Moreover, DIRCO pointed out discrepancies between the report’s stance on the Expropriation Act and the views expressed by the United Nations. The UN Human Rights Office has praised the act as “a critical step in addressing the country's racially imbalanced land ownership.”
