UN Sounds Alarm: Sudan's Darfur, Khartoum Face Risk of Famine
In August 2024, famine conditions were confirmed in the Zamzam displacement camp, located in Sudan’s North Darfur state. Since then, the situation has deteriorated, with famine now affecting multiple regions in Darfur and Kordofan, according to Stephane Dujarric, spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, during a daily press briefing.
The crisis has worsened dramatically in El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur. The city remains isolated, severely lacking humanitarian aid, and facing escalating food insecurity. The World Food Programme (WFP) issued an urgent call for increased humanitarian access to El Fasher, where residents are reported to be surviving on animal feed and food scraps.
The WFP is still delivering digital cash assistance to approximately 250,000 people in the city, enabling them to purchase the increasingly scarce food available in local markets. However, Dujarric stressed that the growing demand makes it crucial to tackle hunger on a much larger scale.
As Sudan continues to be ravaged by conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces—a war that erupted in April 2023 and has since claimed tens of thousands of lives—tens of millions of Sudanese face severe displacement and a deepening humanitarian crisis. Dujarric concluded, "We reiterate our concern about the ongoing conflict and renew our calls for all parties to end the violence, and resolve to dialogue and to put the interest of their people first."
