China Steps up Support for UNRWA

(MENAFN) On Wednesday, China formalized a new agreement to enhance its contribution to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), as the agency battles severe funding shortages and an "existential crisis" triggered by the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

The deal, part of Beijing's annual donation, was signed in the Jordanian capital by Zeng Jixin, head of China's office to the State of Palestine, and Karim Amer, UNRWA's director of partnerships.

Zeng emphasized the "indispensable" role of UNRWA in providing essential humanitarian aid to millions of Palestinian refugees. He noted that China had not only increased its financial support but had also sent medical supplies and other assistance in response to the Gaza conflict.

"China calls on the international community to continue supporting UNRWA," Zeng stated, reiterating China's commitment to working toward a peaceful resolution of the conflict based on a two-state solution.

UNRWA has been grappling with a serious financial crisis after multiple key donor nations froze their contributions, following accusations that several agency staff members were involved in the October 7 Hamas-led attacks. Although many donors have resumed funding, the agency continues to face significant financial hardships.

Juliette Touma, UNRWA's communications director, underscored the agency’s critical situation, describing it as an "existential crisis" fueled by the devastating war in Gaza, where at least 340 staff members have been killed since the conflict began.

"China has been a dear friend of the Palestinian refugees, a dear friend of UNRWA. Their contributions are always welcome," Touma said, acknowledging Beijing's ongoing support.
