UN Highlights Intensifying Violence in Haiti
Ulrika Richardson, the UN’s humanitarian coordinator for Haiti, expressed deep concern over the ongoing crisis during her final update before transitioning to her new role as deputy special representative for the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) and resident coordinator in Libya.
"I can't even find words any longer to describe the situation. Is it alarming? Is it acute? Is it urgent? It's all of that and even more," she stated, underscoring the complex and worsening nature of the emergency.
Richardson reported that gangs have "rummaged the city," perpetrating severe acts of violence that have disproportionately affected women, minors, and the youth population.
She also highlighted the inadequacy of global support, citing that the humanitarian response initiative remains just 9% funded—"the lowest level of funding" worldwide—despite the need for $900 million to address the crisis effectively.
"We have a lot of the tools. The tools are there. We have a humanitarian response plan. It's only funded 9%, it's the lowest level of funding for any response plan in the world," she reiterated, expressing disappointment at the lack of financial commitment.
When asked about alternative measures that might have altered the current trajectory, Richardson emphasized the urgent necessity to stem the flow of illegal weapons into Haiti.
"Simply, there has to be a way of stopping arms coming into Haiti. And of course, it has to do with trafficking," she remarked.
She stressed the critical role of sanctions in disrupting entrenched connections between armed criminal groups and influential political or economic figures.
As Haiti faces one of its gravest humanitarian challenges in recent years, the UN continues to advocate for immediate international intervention, both in terms of security and financial support.
