South African Minister Slams US Human Rights Report
He dismissed the document as “inaccurate and deeply flawed,” particularly challenging the claims it made about his country’s policies.
The report suggests that South Africa is progressing toward land expropriation aimed at Afrikaners and accuses the government of mistreating racial minorities.
However, these allegations have been firmly denied by the South African government.
Lamola, through a statement by DIRCO spokesperson Chrispin Phiri, expressed his “profound disappointment” with the report. Phiri emphasized that the government sees the report as a misleading portrayal, stating, “We find the report to be an inaccurate and deeply flawed account that fails to reflect the reality of our constitutional democracy.”
He went on to highlight the troubling use of “a-contextual information and discredited accounts” in the report.
For instance, Phiri pointed out that the document referenced an incident involving the deaths of farm workers.
Despite the case being under active investigation by South Africa’s independent judiciary, the report wrongly presents it as an extrajudicial killing.
Phiri described this portrayal as “premature” and “a fundamental distortion of the facts,” noting that the individuals involved were formally charged and are being processed in court.
Furthermore, Lamola criticized the way the report addressed incidents of police misconduct, specifically those involving the use of force.
Phiri remarked that the report failed to recognize the comprehensive procedures in place to ensure accountability, explaining, “Institutions designed to protect our democracy are actively investigating whether due process was followed and if such force was warranted.”
He concluded that the report’s failure to acknowledge these safeguards further undermined its credibility.
