UN Security Council Denounce Killing of Serbian UNIFIL Peacekeeper
"The members of the Security Council condemned the killing of a Serbian peacekeeper from the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) on 4 June," the council said in a press statement, extending condolences to the victim's family and expressing solidarity with Serbia while wishing a swift recovery to those injured.
The council noted that seven UNIFIL peacekeepers have been killed in southern Lebanon since hostilities escalated on March 2. "These deaths represent the most tragic instances in a series of incidents that reflect a pattern of intimidation, endangerment, and attempts to undermine the mandated activities of UN peacekeepers in Southern Lebanon," it said.
The council reaffirmed its backing for UNIFIL and demanded that all parties respect peacekeepers' safety and freedom of movement under international law, underscoring that "peacekeepers must never be the target of an attack." It called for a prompt UN investigation and full accountability for perpetrators, while urging intensified international support for the Lebanese Armed Forces and full implementation of Resolution 1701.
Expressing alarm over the broader escalation, the council pressed all parties to immediately halt hostilities, honor the June 3 ceasefire, and uphold Resolution 1701.
