The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) will provide updates on its building failure investigations and related activities during a virtual meeting of the National Construction Safety Team (NCST) Advisory Committee on Sept. 23 and 24, 2026. During this public meeting, NIST team members will highlight progress on their investigations into the impacts of Hurricane Maria on Puerto Rico and the partial collapse of the Champlain Towers South building in Surfside, Florida. They will also provide an update on NIST’s Disaster and Failure Studies Program and detail their responses to the advisory committee’s 2025 recommendations.

Anyone wishing to attend the virtual meeting must register by 5 p.m. EDT on Wednesday, Sept. 16, 2026. Registered attendees who wish to speak during the public comment period may sign up to do so by selecting “yes” to the public comment question on the registration form. Additional details are available in the Federal Register notice. The full meeting agenda is available on the NIST website

In June 2026, NIST released a video detailing its technical findings on the cause of the Champlain Towers South collapse.

All other previously released materials relating to these investigations are available on the Hurricane Maria and Champlain Towers South websites.
