Blackboard Introduces Cursive, Bringing Transparent Authorship Verification to Every LMS

A new approach to academic integrity—moving beyond AI detection and false positives to evidence of authorship and authenticity

WASHINGTON, DC, UNITED STATES, September 2, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Blackboard today announced the addition of Cursive™ to its portfolio of teaching and learning solutions. Cursive by Blackboard® is an authorship verification solution designed to help educators understand the writing process behind student work and support a more transparent approach to academic integrity.

The challenge facing higher education today is determining whether students are using AI in ways that undermine learning and assessment. Traditional AI detection tools attempt to identify whether work was generated by AI, but they can introduce uncertainty, false positives and allegations that are difficult to substantiate.

Cursive takes a different approach, providing evidence of the authorship process so educators can understand how a student’s work was produced without relying on an AI detection score. That shift is increasingly important as faculty navigate the realities of AI in the classroom, with 73% reporting they have personally dealt with academic integrity issues involving students’ use of GenAI.

"Blackboard is focused on solving the real challenges educators and institutions face, and assessing learning in the age of AI is an urgent priority for many faculty members," said Joe Thibault, VP of New Ventures at Blackboard. “Cursive introduces a new approach to academic integrity, built for the AI era, to give educators the confidence they need that students are doing the work, developing their skills, and making meaningful progress.”

By verifying the writing process rather than simply analyzing the final product of an assignment, Cursive provides evidence of authorship and effort within the digital classroom. Compatible with all major learning management systems (LMS), the tool analyzes more than 5,000 signals of writing behavior, providing visibility into measures including effort, time spent writing, text-level activity, and a replay of the writing process.

Students can also see information about the authenticity of their work, creating greater transparency into how it is evaluated.

Cursive's addition to the Blackboard portfolio gives institutions authorship verification alongside the learning, accessibility, assessment and teaching solutions they already use—creating a more connected approach to teaching, learning and academic integrity.
