Guyana, UN commemorate 60 years of partnership with special stamp
The government and the United Nations (UN) unveiled a commemorative postal stamp, marking Guyana’s 60th anniversary as a member state.
The stamp, commissioned by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the UN Country Team in Georgetown and the Guyana Post Office Corporation on Friday, symbolises Guyana’s enduring partnership with the organisation since joining the UN on September 20, 1966.
Director General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and Guyana’s Ambassador to CARICOM, George Talbot, said Guyana’s membership in the UN reflects its longstanding commitment to multilateralism and the principles of the UN Charter.
He noted that over the past six decades, Guyanese representatives have served in several senior positions within the UN system, including President of the General Assembly, President of the Security Council, Chair of the Council for Namibia and Judge of the International Court of Justice. Talbot also highlighted the UN’s role in supporting Guyana’s development efforts and preserving its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
“We are therefore pleased to mark this important occasion with a modest symbol of Guyana’s enduring partnership with the United Nations, which the commemorative stamp signifies,” he said.
Acting United Nations Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative Katy Thompson described the stamp as a tribute to six decades of cooperation, grounded in shared values of peace, sustainable development, human rights and international partnership.
“This stamp is a representation of three historically great connectors—the Post Office, the United Nations and Guyana,” Thompson said.
The stamp features a map of Guyana alongside the official UN emblem.
The commemorative stamp serves as a lasting symbol of the strong relationship between Guyana and the United Nations, while reaffirming the commitment of both sides to continued collaboration in the years ahead.
The stamp will be available to the general public as of Monday, September, 21st 2026.
